Read Chapter 1: — THE MAN ON THE STAGE
On a wet August morning, Professor Daniel Mercer stood beneath the lights of the Royal College auditorium and listened to an introduction that made him sound like someone he had never met.
Youngest chair of the National Society for Nuclear Medicine. Co-inventor of the Aurora PET/MR platform. Lead investigator on targeted radionuclide therapies. Founder of a rural imaging network that had cut diagnostic delays across three counties.
The applause was generous. Daniel waited for it to settle.
"None of those things happened because one person had a good idea," he said. "Medicine is a relay. Someone discovers the isotope. Someone builds the detector. Someone writes the software. Someone notices an image nobody else understood. Someone sits beside a frightened patient and explains what comes next. If any one of them is missing, the chain breaks."
A reporter later asked when the next Aurora scanner would enter production. Another wanted to know whether Daniel's long-acting strontium therapy would receive national approval. A third asked about an old controversy involving orthopaedic surgeon Marcus Shaw.
Daniel's expression barely changed.
"Marcus and I studied together," he said. "We competed. We argued. We hurt each other. He was also a doctor who did good work for many patients. If you're looking for a simple villain, you'll have to find a different story."
He moved on to the next question.
Only Clara, watching from the side aisle, understood how much effort the answer had cost him.
That evening, after the cameras were gone, Daniel stood alone in the empty hall. On the screen behind him remained the final slide from his lecture: a whole-body PET image, a human outline mapped in light.
Clara joined him.
"You always hated applause," she said.
"I hated applause before the work was finished."
"And now?"
Daniel looked at the luminous image.
"Now I know the work is never finished."
He had not always known that.
Once, he had been nineteen, certain that the future belonged to circuits, signal processors and clean equations.
Then a woman died.
And everything changed.
