The first Aurora prototype produced an image that made Daniel's knees weak.
Not because it was perfect.
Because it worked.
Months of engineering had become anatomy, metabolism and light on a screen.
The system still needed testing, calibration, regulatory review and brutal comparison against established scanners.
Daniel refused celebratory headlines.
"Prototype is not product," he repeated.
Clara ignored him and opened champagne at home.
"This is not a press conference."
"Exactly. Drink."
Aurora eventually entered a multicentre evaluation and performed well enough to justify production.
The first unit outside Northbridge went to Greyfell.
Daniel stood beside Margaret's name on the centre wall during installation.
Clara touched the plaque.
"She would have asked what it cost."
"Then asked why it cost that much."
"Then tried to negotiate."
They both laughed.
Grief had stopped being a wound that opened every day.
It had become architecture.
