When the formal inquiry began, Marcus expected Daniel to bury him.

Instead Daniel submitted a balanced statement.

He documented the conflicts, the payments, the questionable product claims and the need for accountability.

He also described Marcus's clinical skill, his care for his mother, and occasions when he had paid patient expenses anonymously.

Clara read the statement before it was filed.

"You're helping him."

"I'm describing him."

"After what he said about you?"

Daniel looked tired.

"If evidence only matters when I like the person, then I don't believe in evidence."

Marcus was convicted of serious financial and professional misconduct. The sentence was severe but not the maximum prosecutors had sought.

He later learned Daniel's statement had been considered during mitigation.

For weeks he said nothing.

Then he wrote one letter.

I spent half my life trying to beat you, it began. I never noticed you were not running the same race.

Daniel kept the letter in a drawer.

He did not show it to reporters.
