On the twentieth anniversary of Margaret's death, Clara and Daniel returned to the museum where they had found Evelyn Hart's photograph.

The archive had digitised more records. A volunteer showed them a letter Evelyn wrote shortly before her death.

It contained one line Clara had never seen:

If Margaret grows up in a quieter world, that will be enough.

Clara sat down.

Daniel read the sentence again.

The quieter world had never arrived completely.

But Margaret had lived, loved, argued, worked, raised a daughter, funded strangers, and left a name above a diagnostic centre.

Perhaps history did not fulfil promises cleanly.

Perhaps it handed them forward unfinished.
