Read Chapter 1: Gridlock
The first alarm was a low, polite chime, like a doorbell at an inconvenient hour. Étienne Moreau didn’t look up from the thermal load graphs on his primary screen. Paris was pulling its usual evening draw, a hungry beast of metro trains, office towers, and the delicate, invisible dance of voltage balancing across the Île-de-France.
He’d been staring at the numbers for eight hours. The coffee in his mug had gone cold and oily. Across the vast, dim auditorium of the National Control Center, his colleagues spoke in the hushed, terse shorthand of their trade—operators, analysts, a dozen experts managing the heartbeat of the French grid, the largest in Europe. Thirty-two screens above them showed the nation as a tapestry of light and lines, a sprawling, living circuit.
The second alarm was not polite. It was a strident, two-tone klaxon that cut through the low murmur like a scalpel.
“Unusual solar X-ray flux,” a voice announced from the space weather desk. “Class… my God, it’s off the scale. X-28. No, wait.”
A ripple of tension went through the room. Pen clicks stopped. Hands hovered over keyboards. Étienne finally looked up, his eyes finding the solar wind monitor. The graph was a vertical spike of red, an impossible mountain on the display.
“Coronal mass ejection,” the analyst continued, her voice tight. “Arrival time estimated… now.”
Étienne’s blood ran cold. He didn’t need the forecast. He’d seen the preliminary data an hour ago. He’d logged it, filed it, trusted the automated protection systems to handle the increased geomagnetically induced currents. They were designed for this. Every transformer, every substation, every interconnector had relays and safeguards primed to ride out a storm.
The lights in the control room flickered. Once. Twice. Then steadied.
But on the giant wall screen, the tapestry of light began to fray. A cluster of lines in Brittany flickered, then went dark, leaving a black hole in the glowing map. Another cluster in the Alps followed. The humming of the ventilation system seemed to deepen, labored.
“Loss of 400kV loop,” an operator shouted. “Avelin substation, multiple breaker trips.”
The room erupted. Voices overlapped, a storm of its own.
“Transformer failures at Gavrelle and Vigy.”
“Frequency dropping! 49.8 hertz.”
“Voltage collapse imminent in the south-east.”
Étienne was on his feet, his chair scraping back as he moved to the central console. This wasn't a localized event. It was a cascade, a domino effect racing across the continent faster than any human could react. He keyed his headset, his gaze fixed on the Franco-German interconnector status. That was the crucial artery. If a surge of current tried to flood in from Germany’s robust grid, the relays were supposed to isolate it, protecting France’s collapsing network from a fatal pulse.
The indicators on his screen were chaos. Red alarms flashing, system statuses flipping from “Stable” to “Critical.”
Then he saw it.
On the substation for the interconnector at Vigy, a status panel. It showed a command: *MANUAL OPEN – REQUEST CONFIRM 14:32:17.*
Étienne blinked. He zoomed in. It wasn’t a protective trip. There was no fault code preceding it. It was a manual open command. And the timestamp—14:32:17—was before the geomagnetic surge hit the upper atmosphere. Before the first transformer in Brittany failed. It was deliberate, executed with three minutes of malicious intent.
“Who opened the Vigy interconnector?” he yelled, but his voice was lost in the general clamor.
He checked the audit log. The operator ID was “RTE-ADMIN-SYS.” Étienne’s stomach lurped. That was his old clearance. The dormant one, tagged for security penetration audits. A code he hadn’t used since his last black-box job four years ago, after which the whole privileged-user system was supposed to be rebuilt. A ghost in the machine, wearing his digital skin.
The lights flickered again, longer this time. The main screens went black for a second before emergency battery power kicked in, giving them a dim, sickly green view of the sorry state of their charge. The map of France was now a torn, broken net. Over eighty percent of the major transmission lines were offline. The frequency readout was a sputtering fall, a cliff dive toward system collapse.
“Inertia is gone. We can’t save it,” the lead operator murmured, his voice flat with horror. “It’s over.”
As if on cue, a deep, resonant groan traveled through the building’s concrete and steel—the sound of massive rotating machinery grinding to a final, decelerating halt. The emergency lights buzzed and then died.
Darkness. Total and absolute.
The control room, normally a temple of luminescence, became a box of night punctured only by the tiny, frantic lights of personal devices. A few flashlights clicked on, carving anxious cones through the gloom. Someone was swearing, a steady, rhythmic curse. The ventilation fans spun down with a weary sigh.
It was the silence that was the loudest. The absence of the 50-hertz hum that underpinned every second of their lives was physical, a ringing void. The beast was dead.
Étienne felt a sharp, cold pressure against his hip. He fumbled in his pocket, his fingers closing over his phone. The screen didn’t light. He pressed the power button. Nothing. The grid was down, and the cellular repeaters were on the grid. Everything was on the grid, one vast, interwoven dependency, and the grid was gone.
A beam of light swung near him. It was Pascal, the shift lead, his face pale in the reflected glow. He was kneeling beside a young woman slumped in her chair. Claire, the space weather analyst. A thin line of blood was running from her nose, her eyes half-open and unseeing. She had no pulse. The stress—the sudden, unimaginable stress of what they were witnessing—had been too much.
Pascal looked up at Étienne. “She’s gone.”
Étienne just stared for a second. A hand moved to her wrist to check for a pulse himself, but his only find was a bare wrist. Her quartz watch lay beside the keyboard. On instinct, he reached down and picked it up. It was still warm. He stared at the face. The second hand was frozen, not between ticks, but pointed straight down at the six. The tiny LCD panel for the date had gone blank.
Solar storms didn’t kill quartz watches. They were electromagnetic pulses that could fry them. A burst of induction so powerful it would have been felt by every electronic component in the country. He clipped the watch to his own belt loop, a strange talisman, a marker of this exact moment in time.
“We need to get to the crisis bunker,” Pascal said, his voice hoarse. “The protocol.” He was already moving towards a reinforced door at the far side of the room, the emergency stairwell leading down to the secure, shielded underground complex below the building.
All around them, the team was stirring, trying to move in the dark, guided by the tiny lights of their cell phones as if they were lost miners. Some were trying to call loved ones, getting only the dull silence of dead networks. A panic was starting to seep into the room, replacing the professional calm.
Étienne looked back at his dead screen. The ghost command haunted him. He keyed the mic on his headset, but there was no power for the base station. The act was hopeless. He pulled the headset off and dropped it on the desk, its coiled cord clattering in the quiet.
He shouldered his way through the chaos, past the still form of Claire, his mind refusing to process it, to the reinforced door. But he didn't go down. He pushed against the panic-sealed hydraulic door leading to the main corridor that led to the vehicle garage.
“Moreau! The protocol is down!” Pascal shouted behind him. “The bunker!”
Étienne paused at the door, the cold of the metal seeping into his palm. He could go down into the sealed bunker, wait for the order to re-engage, to start piecing the beast back together. It was the responsible choice. The… logical choice.
But the ghost command, the operator ID that was his, and the interconnector opened before the storm hit—that wasn’t an accident of solar activity. That was murder. This wasn't a natural disaster. This was a public execution of the grid.
And whoever did it would be watching the bunker activity. Would have prepared for it.
“Dammit, Étienne!” Pascal’s voice was more strained now. A fight had broken out, someone shouting that they had to get back to their family.
Étienne turned his head just enough to see his colleague’s silhouette in the dark. “That open command,” he said, his voice low. “It wasn’t a fault. It wasn’t a trip.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Vigy. It was opened manually, three minutes before the CME hit. From an administrator account.”
The silence from Pascal was heavy. He knew exactly what that meant. They had to fight the storm, yes, but they were also fighting a human agency.
“That’s not our problem right now,” Pascal said finally. “Our problem is the grid.”
*Our problem is the grid.* Étienne almost laughed. In that single, breathless moment, he knew Pascal was wrong. The grid was just the victim.
“You’re right,” Étienne said, and pushed the door open into the black corridor, away from the bunker, away from the protocol.
He knew one thing. He had to get to the main substation north of Paris. It was the heart of the regional distribution network, the first major node they’d have to bring back online. And he had a feeling that whoever had signed his name to that kill command had left a trap there, waiting for the first engineers to walk in and try to resurrect the machine.
And he was the only one who knew to look for it. With a final click, the quartz wristwatch on his belt began to tick, its frozen second hand shivering back to life in the grip of a man-made, aurora-lit night.
