Peter arrived with fruit, a cheap bottle of whisky and a face full of shame.
Emma would not let him inside.
He stood in the rain.
“I was wrong.”
“That’s not enough.”
“I know.”
He admitted Gavin had paid him for small jobs, then bigger ones.
He had supplied Martin’s identity documents.
He had helped arrange the false vehicle transfer.
He had watched Gavin plan the harassment.
“Why?”
Peter cried.
“I was poor and angry about being poor.”
Emma’s voice stayed cold.
“So you sold us.”
“Yes.”
No excuse followed.
That mattered.
Emma recorded the conversation with his permission.
Peter agreed to give a formal statement.
Her mother wanted to forgive him immediately.
Emma did not.
Forgiveness, she decided, was not the same as restoring access.
