Emma learned by accident that Daniel was not the financially struggling junior officer she had imagined.
His late parents had owned a successful engineering consultancy.
He had inherited money.
A great deal of it.
“You let me think you were broke.”
“I never said I was broke.”
“You live in a council flat.”
“I rent a small flat.”
“You cycle everywhere.”
“I like cycling.”
“You wear supermarket shirts.”
“They cover my torso.”
Emma stared at him.
“Why are you working here?”
His answer came slowly.
“My father grew up in a village like this. He left because he believed nothing changed unless somebody with choices chose to stay.”
Emma softened.
Then hardened again.
“Don’t invest in my business.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Good.”
“I was going to buy honey.”
“That is permitted.”
