“I wanted to understand it.”
“And?”
“I understand enough to know I can do public work without being employed by the council.”
He joined a regional rural-development foundation.
The salary was lower.
Emma laughed for a full minute.
“You secretly have money. You refuse promotions. You own three good shirts.”
“Four.”
“This relationship is built on deception.”
“Should I leave?”
“No.”
He smiled.
