Daniel’s relationship with Maggie repaired faster than his relationship with Graham.

Perhaps because Maggie had been there.

She had packed lunches, attended school meetings, sat beside hospital beds, argued about homework and waited outside university graduation in the rain.

Her lie about Graham mattered.

Her life with Daniel mattered too.

Forgiveness did not mean declaring the lie harmless. It meant refusing to reduce thirty years of motherhood to the worst decision she had made.

With Graham, Daniel had fewer memories to protect.

They had to create them.

They began with ordinary things.

Tea after shift.

An argument over football.

A shared dislike of sweetened coffee.

Daniel teaching Graham to use a modern collaborative review platform without swearing at the tablet.

One evening Graham said, “I don’t expect you to make up for lost time.”

“Good.”

“I mean it.”

“So do I.”

Graham nodded.

Daniel continued, “We can’t recover it. We can stop wasting what’s left.”

Graham looked away toward the tunnel lights.

“That sounds like something your mother would say.”

“Terrifying, isn’t it?”

They laughed.
