Another year passed.

The numbers accumulated quietly: bridges completed, culverts opened, kilometres of track bed accepted, millions of work hours without serious injury after the tunnel incident.

The final major span in Graham’s package was launched on a clear morning.

Workers gathered at safe viewing points. The client team stood with cameras. Local families watched from beyond the barrier.

Daniel found Samir beside him.

“Remember the first day?” Samir asked.

“The overturned vehicle?”

“You were my favourite British person.”

“Was?”

“You have had time to disappoint me.”

Daniel laughed.

The span moved into position with controlled, almost anticlimactic precision.

That was the nature of good engineering. The most dramatic success often looked boring because every dangerous possibility had been considered beforehand.

Graham watched without speaking.

When the final survey confirmed position, he took off his hard hat.

For a second Daniel expected a speech.

Instead Graham said quietly, “That’ll stand longer than we will.”

Daniel looked at the structure.

“Hopefully.”

“Cheerful thought.”

“It’s the point, isn’t it?”

Graham nodded.

Build something useful.

Then leave it for people you will never meet.
