Read Chapter 33: — COMMISSIONING SPEED

The first test train entered the completed corridor at dawn.

Daniel stood in the control room watching live telemetry.

Speed increased in stages.

One hundred kilometres per hour.

One sixty.

Two hundred.

Higher.

The line that had once disappeared beneath moving sand now carried a train across the desert with barely perceptible vibration.

Engineers watched data, not scenery. Wheel-rail interaction. Track geometry. Structure response. Communications. Power systems. Every graph mattered.

When the test completed successfully, applause broke out.

Toby hugged the nearest person, who happened to be a confused client representative.

Maya grabbed Daniel’s hand.

Graham stood behind them.

For once, he did not shout.

Daniel thought of his first day: overturned car, blistering road, a stranger yelling that anyone unable to cope should go home.

He turned.

“Well, Mr Bennett?”

Graham looked at the screens.

“Could be better.”

Daniel laughed.

“Of course.”

Then Graham smiled.

“It’s good, son.”

The word landed quietly.

Daniel did not answer immediately.

Then he said, “Thanks, Dad.”

Maya covered her mouth.

Toby openly cried and blamed dust again.
