Read Chapter 1: The First Rupture

The first shock came through the deck plates like a heartbeat from something enormous and angry. Élise felt it in her knees before the alarms caught up, a low-frequency thrum that vibrated up through her suit’s maglocks and into her spine. Fifteen years on rock-and-ice stations had taught her the difference between a mining blast and a structure groan. This was neither.

She was halfway under the primary ore conveyor’s drive housing, a magnetic wrench in her gloved hand, when the second shock hit. The bay lights stuttered. A gantry ladder rattled against its moorings like a trapped bird. Then the sound—a scream of tortured metal that cut through the vacuum-transmitted vibrations of the deck and into the thin air of the repair bay’s pressurised module.

“Marchand, we’ve got a fracture signature on Conveyor One.” The voice in her helmet was Base Comms, a young woman named Okafor whose calm sounded manufactured. “Seismic event, 4.2 on the local scale. Epicentre is… you.”

“I know where I am, Okafor.” Élise rolled out from under the housing, pulling herself upright with a practiced grip on a support strut. Her knees complained. Forty-seven years old, and the gravity of Luna Secunda was a quarter of Earth’s, but the years of hauling, crawling and torquing had left their mark regardless. “Give me a visual on the fracture line.”

Her heads-up display flickered, then populated with a schematic of the conveyor system. Conveyor One was the main artery of the base’s ore-processing spine, a five-hundred-metre articulated belt that carried raw regolith from the eastern excavation face to the crusher and separator units. The schematic was livid with red.

“That’s not a fracture,” Élise muttered. The line on her display ran clean and straight across three segments of the conveyor housing. Seismic fractures didn’t look like that. They jagged, they branched, they followed fault lines in the rock and the grain of the metal. This was a single, surgical slash.

“Say again, Marchand?” Okafor’s voice had lost a little of its rehearsed calm.

“Never mind. Get me Chen and Petrov. We’re going to need a three-person rotation to bypass the jammed airlock and get eyes on the damage.”

She was already moving, her maglocks disengaging with a click of her heels against the deck. The repair bay was a cathedral of machinery, all gantries and hydraulic arms and the smell of ozone and recirculated air. It was her church, her cathedral, her home. She knew every weld, every pressure line, every weak point. And she knew that this weak point was not supposed to exist.

Chen arrived first, his lanky frame folded into his pressure suit with the ease of a man who had spent his entire adult life in one. He was thirty-two, a structural engineer from Singapore who had never lost his boyish enthusiasm for explosions, particularly the controlled kind. Behind him came Petrov, a broad-shouldered Ukrainian who moved with the deliberate economy of someone who had learned to conserve every breath, every joule, every ounce of strength. His specialty was life support. He was also, in Élise’s experience, the calmest man on the base, which made him invaluable in a crisis.

“Conveyor One,” Élise said, handing each of them a hardcopy schematic board from the rack by the bay’s main hatch. She didn’t trust far-eye drones for primary diagnostics; she wanted human eyes on the metal. “Third segment. Fracture pattern is anomalous. I need visual confirmation and a structural integrity assessment before I sign off on a bypass.”

“Anomalous how?” Chen asked, already scanning the board, his eyes bright behind his faceplate.

“It’s too clean,” Élise said. “Not a natural break.”

Petrov said nothing, but his eyebrows rose a fraction. He clipped the board to his chest and fell into step beside her.

The route to the airlock that serviced Conveyor One’s third segment took them through two pressure vestibules and a service crawlspace that had been designed for robots and never intended for human shoulders. Élise went first, because it was her habit to take point in tight spaces. Her headlamp cut a cone of revealing light through the dark, and her breath fogged the faceplate for the brief, cold seconds before her suit’s heaters kicked in.

The crawlspace let out into a junction chamber. The airlock that connected it to the exterior was a heavy steel drum set into the bulkhead, ringed with hydraulic clamps. The indicator light above it was a dull, angry red.

“Jammed,” Chen said, stating the obvious.

“Good catch.” Élise was already at the control panel, her fingers moving across the membrane keyboard. “The inner door’s giving a partial signal—it thinks it’s closed, but not sealed. The outer door is reporting open. That’s our bypass candidate.”

She pulled the access plate and exposed the manual override mechanism. It was a simple gear-and-lever system, deliberately robust, designed to be operated by a gloved hand in an emergency. She grabbed the lever and hauled.

Nothing.

“Frozen,” she grunted. “Hydraulic lock. Chen, get on the aux pressure line. Petrov, watch my six and tell me if the bulkhead starts moaning.”

“If the bulkhead moans, we will have bigger problems than a stuck door,” Petrov said, but he took up position by the inner hatch, one hand resting lightly on the manual seal release, his body a bulwark of calm.

Chen connected a high-pressure hose to the ancillary fitting on the airlock’s side and began to pump. The lever resisted at first, then gave with a groan of its own, the hydraulics hissing as pressure equalized. The red light flickered, wavered, and turned amber.

“Got it,” Élise said. She cranked the hand wheel the rest of the way, feeling the resistance through the thick gloves, the heavy mechanical language of metal on metal. The inner door slid open with a sigh, revealing the airlock’s interior: steel walls, a spool of emergency tether, and the far door, the one that led out onto the lunar surface.

She cycled the outer door. The process took ninety seconds, an eternity in the thin air of urgency, and she used it to check her suit’s manifold and her oxygen reserves. Fifteen years. She had done this a thousand times. But the vibration in her chest didn’t go away.

The outer door opened onto a vista of grey desolation. The sun was low on the horizon, a hard white disc that cast long, sharp shadows across the regolith. The excavation face loomed to the east, a terraced scar on the lunar plain, and leading away from it, a silver artery of metal—Conveyor One.

Élise stepped out first, her maglocks securing her to the deck plates that ran the length of the conveyor line. The silence was absolute, the vacuum pressing against her suit like a held breath. She walked toward the third segment, her headlamp carving a path through the shadow cast by the gantry above.

She saw it before she reached it. A clean, bright edge of freshly exposed metal. No buckling. No tearing. No fragmentation. The conveyor housing had been cut.

She stopped at the gash. It ran from the top of the housing down to the base, a single straight line that sliced through the armoured plating as if a giant had taken a scalpel to it. The cut was too precise for any natural geological event. She reached out and ran her gloved fingers along the edge. It was smooth, almost polished. A cutting torch did that. A laser did that. A seismic shock did not.

“Company,” Petrov said from behind her. His voice was flat, but the single word carried weight.

Élise turned. He was not looking at the cut. He was looking further down the conveyor line, past the third segment, toward the junction where Conveyor One fed into the main crusher building. There, in the shadow of the structure’s bulk, a small figure was moving. A suit. A human suit, or something wearing one.

“That’s not one of our rotation,” Élise said. The base’s external crew schedule was a matter of public record in the system; she knew every EVA slot for the next forty hours. The figure moved with a purpose, a deliberate gait, hugging the side of the crusher building as if it did not want to be seen. And then, as she watched, it disappeared around the far corner. A second figure followed.

Chen had reached her. He was looking at the cut now, his own fingers hovering over it, not quite touching. “This isn’t a fracture, boss. This is sabotage. Someone cut through a primary ore line. That’s not an accident.”

“No,” Élise said. Her mind was already working, clicking through implications like a ratchet. The cut was designed to look like a seismic failure. It was roughly placed, roughly timed. But whoever had executed it had been interrupted. The shockwave, whatever had caused it, had come first. The cut had been finished afterwards, or perhaps it had been started and the shock had been the cover.

The figures were gone. They could be anywhere now, inside the base or out, wearing stolen suits, moving through a facility that was not designed to keep people out because it was not designed to need to.

“Get me a channel to Fournier,” she said, her voice level, the voice she used when she wanted people to listen and not to panic. “And get a drone up. I want to know who just went for a walk on my conveyor line.”

Chen opened his mouth, but Élise wasn’t done. She looked from the clean cut in the metal back toward the base, its lights bright and steady against the black sky.

“And tell them I’m coming in with a fracture report. The natural kind. Because if I file otherwise, someone is going to start asking questions that I want answers to first.”

She clicked her maglocks free and started back toward the airlock, her mind already turning over what she had not seen, what the fragmentary shapes in the shadows might mean. The base had been her home for three years. She had thought it was safe. Now, under the hard white sun of the lunar morning, she was not so sure.
