Monte Carlo Burn
Read Chapter 19: Ledger and Loot
The vault door sighed shut behind Alex, sealing him in a womb of cold air and muted gold light. The room was smaller than the blueprints suggested—twenty feet square, lined with safety deposit boxes on three walls, a reinforced steel table in the center. On that table sat a black leather-bound ledger, its spine cracked, pages curling with age. Julia's ledger. The one that would clear his name or bury him.
He moved fast. No time to admire the take. The settlement transfer was running upstairs, Zoe feeding dummy accounts while the real money slipped through cracks in the casino's own systems. All he needed was forty seconds with that book, then out through the maintenance shaft, then gone.
His fingers brushed the leather. Cold. Real.
The first laser grid snapped on with a sound like a struck tuning fork. Alex froze, hand hovering an inch above the ledger. Red light painted the air in intersecting planes, floor to ceiling, wall to wall—a spiderweb of death between him and the door.
He didn't breathe. Movement triggered motion sensors. The grid was new. Laurent's work, or Viktor's. Someone had anticipated him—anticipated this exact route.
From a speaker hidden somewhere in the ceiling, Viktor's voice came smooth and amused. "Hello, Alex. I thought you might try something clever."
Alex kept his eyes on the grid's pattern. Three layers, staggered. A gap at waist height on the left side, but too narrow. Another low near the floor, but the angle would require him to crawl through broken glass. The pattern repeated on a cycle—he didn't know the cycle time.
"You're early," Alex said. Calm. As if discussing the weather.
"Am I? I thought I was right on time. You're in my vault, Alex. Touching my property."
*My vault.* Not Laurent's. Not the casino's. Viktor had already moved in—the casino's security had already switched hands, or would by nightfall. The whole job was burning down around him.
"Where's Laurent?" Alex asked, buying time, fingers twitching at his side. The ledger was eight inches from his hand. The nearest gap in the grid was four feet away.
"Laurent is taking an extended vacation. He send his regards." Viktor's voice hardened. "You have two choices. Stand still and wait for my men to arrive—they're two floors down. Or move, and let the lasers do the work. I've calibrated them to cut deep. Not kill. I want you alive for what comes next."
Alex counted the pulse. The grid flickered—just for a beat—on a seven-second cycle. But the gaps shifted position each time it refreshed. Impossible to predict.
He was out of time. Zoe had the transfer running, but if Viktor's men reached the vault before Alex got out with that ledger, the whole setup collapsed. The dummy accounts would be traced. The kill-switch would be useless. Julia's intel would stay buried, and Alex's debt would come due in the worst way.
Decision time.
He dove for the floor, rolling under the lowest plane of red light. The beam passed inches above his back, heat radiating close enough to singe his jacket. He came up on the far side of the table, ledger now within reach. His hand closed on the spine. The book was heavier than he'd expected—solid, real, the weight of years of dirty money and complicit names.
The grid recalibrated. New pattern, lower this time. The gap he'd climbed through closed, replaced by a diagonal channel just above his head.
"Impressive," Viktor said. "But predictable. You always commit fully, Alex. It's your best quality and your worst."
Alex pulled the ledger into his chest, tucked it under his arm, and scanned the new geometry. Two options: a high crawl over a briefcase-sized gap near the door, or a shoulder-first squeeze through a narrow slot he'd never make with the book. The ledger was too thick to fit.
He could leave it. Run. Live to fight another day.
Zoe's face flashed in his mind—the way she'd looked when she said she didn't trust him. He'd earned that mistrust. But this ledger was the difference between freedom and Viktor's permanent hospitality. There was no future where he walked away without it.
He threw the ledger. It sailed through the gap, spinning edge-over-edge, and landed on the vault floor just beyond the grid's outer boundary. The book skidded to a stop against the door.
Viktor laughed. "Resourceful. But you're still stuck in here."
Alex turned to face the sound of the voice. "I wasn't planning on staying."
The grid flickered again. Seven-second cycle. He timed it, feeling the pattern shift in his gut. The next refresh created a path—impossible to move through standing, but a single hand-over-hand crawl along the ceiling might—
Something burned across his shoulder. A searing line of heat that drew a sharp hiss through his teeth. The ledger throw had shifted his position two inches closer to the beam's edge. The laser had clipped him on the way through.
Warm blood soaked through his jacket. But the wound was shallow—a graze, nothing more. He could move. He could still move.
Behind him, the vault door mechanism began to grind. Someone was unlocking it from the outside.
Viktor's voice came again, louder now, closer. "Ah, that will be them. Do enjoy your last moments of freedom, Alex. I have plans for you."
Alex looked at the gap in the grid. The cycle was coming. Five seconds. Four. Three.
He ran—not away, but toward. Straight at the nearest beam, leaping at the last instant, twisting his body sideways to thread the needle between two planes of red light. The heat screamed past his face, blistering his cheek. He hit the ground rolling, came up with the ledger in his arms, and drove his shoulder into the vault door just as it cracked open.
A guard's face appeared in the gap. Alex hit him with the ledger's edge—full force, square in the jaw. The man crumpled.
Beyond him, the corridor opened into chaos: fire alarms blaring, sprinklers raining down, smoke churning through the air. Marco's doing. The whole casino was coming apart.
Alex burst through, clutching the ledger to his chest, blood running down his arm, the cut on his cheek burning white-hot. Behind him, the vault's grid snapped off. In front of him, an escape route the size of a heartbeat.
