Offside Hearts
Read Chapter 24: The Second Turn: The Missing Link
The burner phone buzzed against the dash of Jack’s Range Rover, rattling loose change in the cup holder. Elena grabbed it before the second vibration, her heart already at full sprint. The screen showed a number she didn’t recognize. No photo this time.
She answered on the third ring. “Hello?”
A woman’s voice, trembling but steady, cracked through the speaker. “Is this Elena Marsh?”
“Who is this?”
“Sarah Okafor.” A pause, breath rattling. “You’ve been looking for me. You and Captain Hayes. I need you to listen, because I don’t have much time.”
Jack slammed the brakes, pulling the car onto the hard shoulder of the M4. The early-morning darkness pressed against the windscreen. He killed the engine. Silence flooded the cabin.
“Dr. Okafor,” Elena said, her voice dropping. “We saw the photo. Are you safe?”
“I’m not the one they’re coming for,” Sarah said. Her voice had the clipped authority of someone used to issuing orders. “You are.”
Elena’s skin prickled. Jack leaned toward the phone, jaw tight, knuckles white on the steering wheel.
“I know about the frame-up,” Sarah continued. “The tape of Mr. Hayes in the medical room. I recognized the location immediately, even from that degraded footage. It’s the old Battersea facility. And I know who set it up.”
“We think it’s Hugh Ashcroft,” Jack said. “The former owner.”
A sharp, bitter laugh crackled through the speaker. “Ashcroft is smart, but he’s not that smart. He didn’t know about the medical side at all. That was always my department.” She paused. “It was Dan. Assistant Coach Dan Whitmore.”
Elena’s gut twisted. “Dan? We already confronted him. He was involved in the leak, but he was working with Ray. Under duress, he said.”
“He would say that. Dan has been running a gambling ring out of the club’s youth academy for three years. He bet on matches, including friendlies. Including that one in Istanbul. When he couldn’t cover his losses, he found another way out. He didn’t recruit Ray. Ray recruited him—but only after Dan was already compromised.”
Jack’s voice came out low, rough. “He fabricated the drug test? The medical records?”
“He fabricated the *evidence* of a drug test,” Sarah said. “I was in that room. There was no needle, no blood draw, no test. The trialist who collapsed had an undiagnosed heart murmur. It was real, but it was medical, not pharmacological. Dan knew I’d check the boy’s file, so he swapped the records. He made it look like I’d covered up a positive test.”
“Why?” Elena pressed. “What was in it for him?”
“Protection. He owed money to the wrong people. Ashcroft found out about his gambling debts and offered him a deal: make the doctor look corrupt, and Ashcroft would clear Dan’s debts and keep him on staff when the club changed hands. Dan took the bait, and he’s been choking on it ever since.”
Sarah’s voice cracked. “He came to my flat last night. Forced me out. Said if I stayed, I’d be the one taking the fall for the whole thing. He’s been feeding Pemberton a narrative that I was the mastermind—that I leaked the records, that I drafted the hit pieces, that I blackmailed Ray.”
“But you have proof,” Elena said. Not a question. A demand.
Silence stretched. Then Sarah spoke, her voice hardening into something fragile but determined. “I have the original medical file. The real one. The boy’s heart condition, the ECG, the scans. I kept copies. I also have a recording of Dan and Ashcroft from a month before the club sale. They’re laughing about it. About the lookalike they hired to stand in for Hayes. About how easy it was to find a washed-up midfielder with Jack’s build and a decent impersonation of his voice.”
Jack’s breath caught. “The lookalike.”
“Yes. Dan hired him through a contact at a talent agency that supplies extras and stunt doubles for the sports drama circuit. Paid him in cash. The man never even knew what the footage was for.”
Elena’s mind raced. “Where are you now?”
“I can’t tell you that. Not yet. Dan has people watching the roads out of London. If they see you heading west, they’ll know I contacted you.”
“Then let us come to you,” Elena said. “Give me a location. We’ll protect you.”
“You can’t protect anyone right now, Ms. Marsh. You’re the one with the target on your back.” Sarah’s voice shifted, softer. “I read your articles. I know about the leak at the Independent. And I know about your past—the fabricated quote that got you suspended.”
Elena’s blood ran cold. She said nothing.
“I’m not threatening you,” Sarah continued. “I’m telling you that we’re the same. We both made mistakes that powerful men used against us. But I’m done running. I’ll testify. I’ll give the court everything—the file, the recording, the lookalike’s name. But I need immunity. I need you to make sure that when I step into the light, I don’t get destroyed afterward.”
Jack’s hand found Elena’s, squeezing hard. She squeezed back.
“I can’t promise immunity,” Elena said slowly. “But I can promise that when you testify, you’ll have the loudest voice in the room. And I’ll make sure they hear you before they hear anyone else.”
A long pause. Wind howled through the speaker—Sarah was outside, somewhere exposed.
“There’s a safehouse in Penzance,” Sarah said at last. “Owned by a friend of mine. A retired nurse. I’ll text you the address. Come alone, and come before noon. If Dan’s people find me first, all of it disappears.”
Another pause, longer this time. “And Mr. Hayes?”
“Yes.”
“Your father didn’t go bankrupt in 2011. He was leveraged out by a man named Ashcroft. The same man who framed you. It’s all connected. All of it. He’s been cleaning house for a decade, preparing for the moment the club’s value peaked. And now that you and Ms. Marsh have shaken the tree, he’s ready to burn it down.”
The line went dead.
Elena stared at the phone. Jack’s jaw was stone. The engine ticked as it cooled.
“Penzance,” he said. “That’s seven hours.”
Elena checked her watch. It gave them nine.
She turned to him. Her voice was steady, but the world beneath her feet had cracked wide open.
“Then we better not stop for breakfast.”
