THE BREAD WAR

Synopsis

Northern France, 1358. The castles of Artois and Picardy change hands faster than the harvest can ripen, and a man without a lord is scarcely more secure than a wolf without a den. Martin Vautrin, a crossbowman whose patron has died in a failed campaign, joins a wandering mercenary company simply to eat. He fights for French captains, English garrisons, and anyone else who can pay in good silver. Each contract teaches him the same lesson: kings speak of honour, but soldiers march on bread.
