The Constable's Curse
Read Chapter 28: The Debt Paid
The fog had thickened over the Thames by the time they reached the South Bank, and Amara felt the weight of the night pressing against her ribs. Julian walked beside her in silence, his coat collar turned up against the damp, but she caught the way his fingers kept brushing the hilt of the knife he carried—a nervous habit she'd never seen in him before.
The Keeper's favor had cost them the evening, and the museum's exhibition hall was now theirs for the ritual. But as they cut through the narrow alley behind the Old Vic, the air changed. The fog coiled tighter, and the temperature dropped like a stone.
"Julian." She stopped. "Do you feel that?"
He did. She saw it in the way his shoulders squared, the way his breath fogged in front of his face despite the mild night. "We're not alone."
The figure emerged from the mist as if it had been woven from it. Tall, gaunt, wearing a Victorian undertaker's coat that hung past its knees. Its face was a smooth, pale mask without features—just a suggestion of a mouth that curved when it spoke.
"Constable Cole. Julian Blackwood."
Amara stepped in front of Julian. "You're not welcome here."
"I am never welcome anywhere." The entity's voice was dry as old parchment. "But I have come for payment. The debt has matured. The terms were clear."
Julian moved past her, and she grabbed his arm. "Don't. It's what Esme wants—she's using this thing to separate us."
But the entity tilted its head. "The witch does not command me. She commissioned me. There is a difference, though one might forgive your confusion."
"Explain." Julian's voice was flat, but Amara felt his pulse racing under her fingers.
"Your soul was collateral in a bargain struck in 1843. The witch Esme bound you to service through me—a debt collector, as you've come to know us. But the witch grows tired of her leash. She wishes to break the bond, and she sent me to collect what is owed so that she might reclaim her instrument."
Amara's mind raced. Danny had said Esme wanted them both alive and willing for the new moon ritual. If this entity took Julian's soul now—
"You'll have nothing." She stepped forward. "He's protected. The seal—"
"The seal inside you is not a shield, child. It is a weight." The creature's featureless face seemed to regard her. "It has been growing heavier, has it not? More aware? You feel it watching when you sleep. You hear it breathing in the quiet moments."
Her heart stuttered. She hadn't told anyone about that.
Julian turned to her, something raw in his eyes. "Amara. It's true, isn't it?"
She couldn't lie to him. Not now. "It's... getting harder to ignore."
The entity extended a pale hand. "The debt must be paid. The witch has demanded it. Unless—" It paused, the suggestion of a smile curving its mask. "—you wish to negotiate."
Julian's jaw tightened. "You said my soul was collateral. What would you accept in its place?"
"Julian, no." Amara grabbed his shoulder. "You can't bargain with these things. Every deal is a trap."
"Every deal is a transaction," the entity corrected. "The trap is in the fine print. But I am an honest broker. I collect what is owed. I do not invent new terms."
"Then what will satisfy the debt?"
The entity's head swiveled toward Amara with an unnerving precision. "The witch wants freedom from her bargain with me. She believes she can reclaim you wholly if the debt is cleared. But I am not her servant, and I have no interest in her ritual."
"Then what do you want?" Amara demanded.
"Information." The word hung in the fog. "The seal you carry—it is old. Older than the witch. Older than Julian's curse. I have been collecting debts for two centuries, but I have never encountered anything like it. I want to know what it is. Where it came from. How it binds."
The seal pulsed inside her, a warning thrum that vibrated through her sternum. "No."
"No?" The entity sounded almost amused. "Then he dies. His soul becomes mine, the debt cleared, and the witch loses her instrument. She'll find another way to use you, child, but she'll have to work harder for it."
Julian's hand found hers, cold but steady. "Amara. Let me do this."
"You can't—"
"The secret of the seal," Julian said, his voice cutting through her protest. "I'll give you the secret of the seal. If you release me from the debt and leave us alone tonight."
The entity considered. The fog around them seemed to hold its breath.
"The secret of the seal," it repeated. "You know it?"
"I know some of it. But what I know is true, and it's more than anyone else has ever confirmed."
A long silence. Then the entity nodded slowly. "Accepted."
"Julian no—" Amara's protest died in her throat as Julian began to speak.
"The seal was not created by any human hand. It was broken from a larger artifact—a key that held the gates of the underworld shut. The witch's bloodline has guarded it for generations, and the seal chose Amara because she is the last of that line to carry the old magic untainted. But it is a living thing. It feeds on the bearer's will, and it grows stronger with every soul it touches."
The entity was silent for a long moment. "The witch knows this."
"She does. And she knows that the seal cannot be removed by force. Only by willing surrender."
Amara felt the world tilt. "Julian, you just—you gave her everything."
He turned to her, and she saw something broken in his eyes. "It'll be fine. Trust me."
The entity extended its hand, and Julian clasped it. For a moment, she saw black veins crawl up Julian's forearm before fading. "Debt paid," the creature intoned. "But you have bound yourself more deeply, Julian Blackwood. The knowledge you gave me—I will share it with the witch. She will know you betrayed her secrets. And she will own you more completely than before."
Then the fog swallowed it, and Julian stood alone in the alley, swaying.
"Julian." Amara caught him before he fell. "What did you just do?"
He looked at her, grief etched into every line of his face. "I saved my own soul." His laugh was hollow. "And I sold yours to a thing that can't be reasoned with."
