Read Chapter 12: Six Weeks

Six weeks sounded generous until Eleanor began counting weekends.

There were only six.

The knowledge changed ordinary time.

Tuesday dinners became appointments with consequence. A Sunday morning in bed acquired the emotional weight of a national holiday. Even arguments seemed expensive.

Theo refused to let that make them polite.

“You reorganised my kitchen,” he said one evening.

“I improved it.”

“You moved the tea.”

“The tea was beside the oven.”

“That is where tea lives.”

“Tea does not have territorial rights.”

“It does in Britain.”

Eleanor stood in his narrow Camden kitchen, holding a tin of Earl Grey.

Theo’s flat looked like the inverse of hers. Books stacked beneath chairs. Acoustic models hung from walls. Half-finished sketches occupied the dining table. A piano took up space the room could not afford.

“You own a piano,” she said.

“You own three screens that show your sleep.”

“They no longer do.”

“Progress.”

He sat at the piano.

“Play something.”

“No.”

“You wanted to be a composer.”

“That does not mean I perform on command.”

“Coward.”

He looked over his shoulder.

“You are becoming difficult.”

“Resonance.”

“Don’t blame the model for your personality.”

He played anyway.

Not a formal piece. A sequence of quiet chords, unfinished and searching.

Eleanor leaned against the counter.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.”

“It’s something.”

“It has no ending.”

“That seems inefficient.”

Theo kept playing.

“Some things aren’t improved by ending quickly.”

She watched his hands.

The melody changed.

It was not sentimental. It had too many unresolved intervals for that. But she recognised a pattern: repetition, interruption, return.

“Did you write this?”

“A long time ago.”

“For Anna?”

He stopped.

Then nodded.

“I couldn’t finish it.”

“Why?”

“Every ending sounded false.”

He closed the keyboard cover.

Eleanor crossed the room and sat beside him.

“Maybe it doesn’t need to end where she did.”

Theo looked at her.

That night, he played the piece again.

This time, he kept going.
