THE ERROR BETWEEN US
Read Chapter 23: Nathan
Nathan resigned as chief executive in May.
He told Eleanor before the board announcement.
They were alone in the original Lattice warehouse, now half-empty after restructuring. Desks had been removed. The open space made the building look younger.
“The board wants Celia as interim,” he said.
“That makes sense.”
“She doesn’t want permanent.”
“Also makes sense.”
Nathan watched her.
Eleanor immediately understood.
“No.”
“I haven’t asked.”
“You’re asking with your face.”
“I have a transparent face.”
“You absolutely do not.”
He smiled.
“The board wants you to interview.”
“For CEO?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want it.”
“That has never stopped a board.”
“I’m head of product. I like product.”
“You just redesigned the company.”
“Against my will.”
“That is often how management begins.”
Eleanor walked toward the windows.
Below, Blackfriars Bridge carried cyclists, buses, autonomous taxis and pedestrians over the river.
“Is this because the forecast said I leave?”
Nathan asked.
She turned.
He raised his hands.
“Sorry.”
“No. It isn’t.”
“Then why no?”
She thought carefully.
For years, advancement had been easy to model. More scope, more influence, larger teams, larger decisions.
CEO should have been the obvious next state.
But the title felt like one of Vela’s old high-compatibility matches: aligned with everything she had previously said she wanted.
“Because I don’t want my work to become the only structure in my life.”
Nathan studied her.
“That sounds like Theo.”
“It sounds like me after Theo.”
“Resonance wins.”
“Don’t ruin it.”
He laughed.
Then grew serious.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For Orpheus. For Anna. For all the times I taught this company that if something could be measured, it could be justified.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Why are you leaving?”
“Because I no longer know whether I’m the person who can build the next version without defending the last one.”
“That is annoyingly self-aware.”
“I have had a difficult year.”
“What will you do?”
“Teach, perhaps.”
“Students?”
“They deserve warning.”
He offered his hand.
Eleanor ignored it and hugged him.
Nathan stiffened in surprise.
Then hugged her back.
When she stepped away, he said, “You have changed.”
“Yes.”
“Do you think it’s good?”
Eleanor considered.
“Ask me later.”
