The Heat Below

The hearing was held in a small courtroom in the administrative district of Level One. Léon stood before a panel of three judges, his hands clasped in front of him, while a lawyer appointed by the Régie presented his case. The charges were serious: unauthorized access to restricted infrastructure, destruction of government property, conspiracy to disrupt the power grid.
But the political winds had shifted. The new Director of the Régie, a reformer named Henri Leclerc, had publicly acknowledged the existence of the unauthorized devices and promised a full investigation. The Conseil des Profondeurs was in disarray, its members scrambling to distance themselves from the scandal. The last thing anyone wanted was to make a martyr of the man who had exposed the truth.
The judges deliberated for less than an hour. When they returned, the lead judge read the verdict in a flat, neutral tone.
"Léon Artaud, the charges against you are dismissed. The court recognizes that your actions, while technically illegal, were undertaken in the public interest. You are free to go."
Léon stood in the courtroom, stunned, as the words sank in. Free. He was free.
The lawyer shook his hand, smiling. "Congratulations. You're a free man."
Léon nodded, still dazed. He walked out of the courtroom and into the corridor, where Claire was waiting for him.
"Well?" she asked.
"Dismissed," he said. "All charges."
Claire's smile widened. "I told you it would work out."
Léon shook his head slowly. "I didn't believe it. I didn't think... I didn't think the system would ever let me go."
"The system is changing," Claire said. "Slowly, painfully, but it's changing. And you're part of that change now."
They walked together through the corridors of Level One, past the gleaming storefronts and the well-dressed residents. It was a different world from Level Four, a world of privilege and comfort that Léon had never fully understood. But now he saw it with new eyes. The comfort was built on a foundation of lies—lies that he had helped to expose.
"Where will you go?" Claire asked. "Back to your quarters?"
Léon thought about his room in the Vavin station, the narrow bed, the cracked datapad. It seemed like a lifetime ago.
"I don't know," he said. "I don't know if I can go back. Everything feels different now."
"That's because everything is different," Claire said. "The world changed while you were in that cell. The power restrictions have been lifted. The lower levels are receiving full power. People are starting to talk about what else might be possible—better housing, fairer food distribution, a real voice in the decisions that affect their lives."
"And the Conseil?"
"The Conseil is fighting for survival. They've arrested a few scapegoats, promised reforms, tried to shift the blame. But the truth is out. The people know they've been lied to. They won't forget."
Léon nodded. The truth was a powerful thing. It couldn't be unlearned.
They reached the platform of the Level One station, where the trains were running again for the first time in years. The new administration had prioritized the restoration of rail service, recognizing that connectivity was essential to rebuilding trust. Léon watched the train approach, its headlights cutting through the darkness of the tunnel.
"Where are you going?" Claire asked.
Léon thought for a moment. Then he smiled, a small, tentative smile that felt strange on his face.
"I'm going home," he said. "To Level Four."
