The Heat Below

The weeks that followed were a time of transition. Léon returned to his job at the Régie, though the work felt different now. He was no longer just maintaining the grid—he was helping to rebuild it. The new administration had launched a comprehensive review of the distribution system, and Léon was assigned to the team tasked with identifying and removing the remaining unauthorized devices.
It was satisfying work. He crawled through the conduits, tracing cables, inspecting junction boxes, documenting everything. Each device he found was a small victory, a confirmation that the truth mattered, that the system could be changed.
But the work was also dangerous. The old guard in the Régie resented the new administration and its reforms. They saw the review as a threat to their authority, and they did everything they could to obstruct it. Reports went missing. Equipment was sabotaged. Technicians who cooperated with the review found themselves reassigned to undesirable posts.
Léon navigated these hazards carefully, relying on the skills he'd developed over years of working in the system. He knew who to talk to, who to avoid, who could be trusted. He built alliances with other reformers, shared information, built a network of people committed to change.
But he also kept his connection to the resistance. He continued to meet with Marcus in the lower tunnels, planning for the next phase of the struggle. The exposure of the power restrictions had been a victory, but it was only the first step. The Conseil still controlled the government, the economy, the media. The fight for a fairer society would be long and difficult.
One evening, as Léon was walking back from a meeting with Marcus, he ran into Amelie in the corridor near the Vavin station. She looked tired but happy, her face flushed with the cold of the tunnels.
"Léon," she said, smiling. "I was hoping I'd see you."
"Amelie." He returned her smile, genuinely glad to see her. "How are you? I heard you were released."
"Last week," she confirmed. "The charges were dropped. The Garde didn't have enough evidence to hold me." She paused, her expression turning serious. "How are you? Really?"
Léon considered the question. "I'm... different," he said. "The cell changed me. I see things more clearly now. I know what I have to do."
"What's that?"
"Fight," he said. "Keep fighting. For a better world."
Amelie nodded, her eyes bright with understanding. "Me too. I've been talking to some of the others—Richard, the community organizers, the people from the other cells. We're thinking about forming a new organization, something more open than the resistance. A group that can operate in the daylight, pushing for political change."
"That's what Claire Fontaine suggested," Léon said. "She thinks the time is right for a public movement."
"She's right," Amelie said. "The people are angry. They've seen what's possible when the power flows freely. They want more."
They walked together through the corridors, talking about the future. Léon felt a sense of excitement building in his chest, a feeling he hadn't experienced in years. The world was changing, and he was part of it.
But he also felt a sense of caution. The Conseil would not give up power without a fight. The road ahead would be dangerous. There would be setbacks, betrayals, losses. The struggle would demand everything they had.
He was ready. He had been in the darkness, and he had found his way back to the light. Now he would help others find their way too.
