The volunteer network shifted as the emergency changed.

Fewer hospital rides were needed. More work involved medication, food and helping people return to ordinary services.

Mick Dawson became the unofficial warehouse comedian. Once movement restrictions eased enough for authorised logistics, he donated his business van and recruited two employees.

"Can't drive," he reminded Ethan, "but I can point at boxes with extraordinary skill."

Jamie recovered and returned only after Claire threatened to personally remove him from any car if he came back early.

He had lost weight and gained humility.

"Don't tell anyone," he said. "I have a reputation."

Arthur resumed chemotherapy.

Peter Lang began volunteering on the neighbourhood phone line.

Linda's husband and son both recovered and returned home after weeks away.

On the day they came back, Maya watched from across the courtyard as the family stood in the doorway unsure whether to hug.

Then they did.

Maya cried again.

By then, crying had stopped embarrassing her.
