The Sky Privateer
Read Chapter 33: The Debt Paid
The Aurora limped through the cloud banks, her starboard engine coughing black smoke. Elias stood at the helm, knuckles white on the wheel, watching the horizon where Grey's topsails still clawed at the sky. They had maybe two hours before the Vigilant closed the gap. Maybe less.
Sable emerged from below, her arm bound in fresh bandages. "MacReady's patched what he can. We've got enough ballast to stay aloft, but not enough shot for a fight."
"Then we don't fight." Elias turned from the wheel. "We lure."
He crossed to the chart table and unrolled a worn map of the channel isles. His finger found a cluster of rocks marked only as navigational hazards. "The Craven Shoals. Tidal currents tear through there twice a day. A ship that knows the channel can pass through untouched. A ship that doesn't—" He drew a line through the rocks. "—gets torn apart."
"You want to run the Aurora through the shoals with Grey on our tail?" Sable's voice was flat.
"I want to run her through with the syndicate's flagship on our tail." Elias pulled a leather pouch from his coat, the hidden cache he'd kept secret even from his crew. Gold sovereigns, letters of marque from three different nations, and a small iron key. "And I know exactly how to get them to follow."
---
The syndicate's flagship, the Leviathan, rose from the morning mist like a cathedral of steel and canvas. Four decks of guns, a hull armored in riveted plate, and at her bow, the gilded figurehead of a serpent swallowing its own tail. She was the most powerful vessel Elias had ever seen outside the Royal Navy's first fleet.
And she was taking the bait.
Elias had sent a signal flare—the syndicate's own code, learned from Voss's papers before the Blackwater had gone down. A claim that the Aurora carried a white flag and the full control mechanism core, and that her captain wished to negotiate terms.
The Leviathan had turned from her patrol line within minutes.
"She's committing," Sable said, peering through the spyglass. "Full sail, coming straight at us."
"Good." Elias adjusted their course, edging the Aurora toward the shoals. "Let her think she's hunting a wounded animal."
The Aurora's engines groaned as he pushed her harder, staying just ahead of the Leviathan's range. He could see the syndicate's guns being run out, could imagine the captain on her deck growing frustrated, ordering more speed.
Then Grey's Vigilant appeared over the eastern cloud line.
Elias cursed. The Royal Navy ship had closed faster than he'd calculated, and now she was angling to cut off his retreat. But Grey wasn't coming at him from behind the Aurora. He was lining up on the Leviathan.
"They're going to fire on the syndicate?" Sable asked, confusion in her voice.
Elias watched. And waited.
The Leviathan's signal flags ran up her masts, and Grey's ship answered in kind.
His blood went cold.
"Coordinates," he said. "Grey's giving them our position. They're working together."
Sable stared at him. "Grey is the one who chased us from Portsmouth. He's the one who—"
"Has been running this whole hunt with the syndicate from the start." Elias's hands shook as he gripped the wheel. The court-martial. The letters of marque. The endless pursuit that always drove him exactly where the syndicate wanted him. All of it. Grey had been the syndicate's leash the entire time, keeping Elias running, keeping him desperate, keeping him moving toward their endgame.
"New plan," Elias said, his voice hardening.
---
The shoals rose around them like teeth from the deep.
Elias took the Aurora straight into the channel, threading between rock spires that scraped the hull. Behind him, the Leviathan followed without hesitation—her captain clearly confident that if Elias could make the passage, so could they. Grey's Vigilant hung back at the shoal's edge, too cautious to follow personally.
"Brace," Elias said.
He waited until the Leviathan had committed to the narrow channel, her bulk filling the gap between two rock walls. Then he cut hard to port, dragging the Aurora behind a spur of black stone.
The Leviathan's captain had a moment to realize his mistake.
Then Elias pulled the lever that dropped the Aurora's ballast anchors. Not to stop—but to swing. The cables caught on the rock spur, whipping the Aurora's stern around as Elias opened the throttle. She pirouetted in the channel like a dancer, coming up directly behind the Leviathan, whose own momentum was carrying her helplessly forward.
"Fire everything," Elias said.
Sable didn't need to be told twice. The Aurora's guns spoke as one, chain shot and grapeshot tearing into the Leviathan's unprotected stern. Her rudder shattered. Her rear sails came down in ribbons. The great ship yawed, caught in the current, and began to slide sideways toward the rocks.
Elias watched, cold and satisfied, as the Leviathan's hull met the shoals with a sound like the world breaking. She listed, taking on water through a rent that ran half her length. Her guns fired wildly, uselessly, their shots going wide into the sky.
But Grey was still there.
The Vigilant had edged into the shoal's mouth, her guns trained on the Aurora. Grey himself stood on her deck, a small figure with a speaking trumpet raised.
"You've made your point, Thorne!" His voice carried across the water. "But you're out of tricks. Surrender the device, and I'll see you hang quickly rather than slowly."
Elias stared at him. The institution he'd served. The flag he'd fought under. All of it corruption, all of it bought and sold by the same syndicate that had ruined his career, killed his crew, and stolen his honor.
He reached into his coat and took out the control mechanism's core. It pulsed faintly, warm in his hand, holding the power to shape storms.
"You want it?" Elias called back. "Come and take it."
He turned to Sable. "Get us to open water. I'm done running."
Behind them, the Leviathan continued to break apart on the rocks. Ahead, Grey's ship began to move.
Elias had never felt less like a privateer. He had never felt more like a man with nothing left to lose.
