Read Chapter 16: The Hidden Lab
Girard moved through the narrow shaft ahead of her, his flashlight cutting a pale cone through the absolute dark. The passage had been hidden beneath the temple’s false floor—a slab of stone so perfectly fitted that Élise had walked over it a dozen times without noticing. Now it gaped open behind them, and the smell of stale air and salt and something else—something metallic, like ozone after a storm—filled her lungs.
“How far down does this go?” she asked, her voice bouncing off the close walls.
“Further than you’d think.” Girard didn’t slow. His shoulders brushed both sides of the tunnel as he descended a set of iron stairs corroded with decades of mineral buildup. “The original team needed space. Silence. The temple was just the cover.”
They reached a landing. A heavy steel door stood before them, riveted, no markings. Girard pressed his palm against a recessed panel. A green line swept across his handprint, then the door hissed open on hydraulic pistons that should have seized decades ago.
The room beyond was vast. Cathedral-vaulted, carved from the bedrock itself, with cables running along the ceiling in thick bundles. Rows of workstations stretched across the floor, monitors dark, instruments caked in dust. But it was the far wall that stopped Élise cold.
Glass tubes. Twelve of them, each the height of a man, arranged in a semicircle like an altar to something terrible. A blue-green fluid filled them, cloudy, thick. And suspended in each one—a shape.
She took a step forward before her mind caught up with her feet. “Jean-Luc. What am I looking at?”
Girard’s face was hollow in the low light. He moved to the nearest tube and wiped a layer of grime from its surface with his sleeve. Inside, a small figure floated, curled in on itself, limbs too thin, spine arched at an angle that wasn’t right. Human. Or nearly human. Fetal. Preserved.
“Failures,” he said quietly. “All of them.”
Élise’s stomach turned. She forced herself to look at each tube in turn. Some held forms more developed than others—one had webbed fingers, another a skull elongated into something almost aquatic. All of them were wrong in ways she couldn't fully name.
“What were they trying to do?”
Girard exhaled slowly, and for a moment he looked every one of his seventy-six years. “In 1968, when we found Aegis, we thought we’d stumbled onto a lost civilization. A city that shouldn’t exist, preserved with a technology we couldn’t explain. But the deeper we looked, the more we realized it wasn’t just a city. It was a machine. And the machine was still running.”
He gestured to the workstations. “The energy signature beneath the temple—we measured it, mapped it, tried to understand it. It came from somewhere else. Not underwater. Not underground. Somewhere else entirely. A dimension our instruments could barely register. The engine wasn’t generating power. It was drawing it through a tear in the fabric of reality itself.”
Élise thought of the humming lock above them, the low-frequency pulse she’d felt in her teeth. “And the military wanted to weaponize that.”
“They wanted to control it. To use the tear as a doorway.” Girard’s voice cracked. “But you can’t send a soldier through a phenomenon that doesn’t exist in our physics. You need something that can survive the crossing. Something built differently. Adapted.”
He nodded toward the tubes. “They tried to build it. Clone it. Grow it. The first experiments were in the sixties, funded quietly through Marin-Tech before it became a ghost. By the time Project Aegis was formalized in ’88, they’d moved on from engineering to bio-engineering. They wanted a vessel—a human vessel—that could withstand traversal through the tear and return with whatever lay beyond.”
“Human vessels,” Élise repeated. Her voice came out flat. “You’re talking about babies. Experimenting on unborn children.”
Girard closed his eyes. “They called them ‘specimens.’ None of them survived past the third trimester. The tissue rejected the dimensional markers. Every single one failed.”
Élise walked along the row of tubes, her gloved fingers hovering over the glass. The fluid inside one of the specimens shimmered faintly, iridescent, catching the light in a way that made her skin prickle.
“You signed the blueprint in ’88,” she said, not turning around. “You were part of this.”
“I was part of the containment,” Girard said, his voice thick with old guilt. “The original discovery sank the careers of everyone involved. Several researchers disappeared in these waters, Élise. Sophie isn't the first. The military shut the program down officially in 1992, but by then the engine had been running for decades. It doesn't need operators anymore. It maintains itself. It waits.”
Élise turned to face him. “Waits for what?”
Girard’s gaze drifted to the tubes. “I don’t know. I was never given access to the deeper chambers. But before the program was officially dissolved, I oversaw the sealing protocols. I built the lock that keeps the inner door shut. I was told—by a man whose name was later scrubbed from every file—that if the engine ever woke fully, the tear would open again. And whatever was on the other side had been reaching through for years.”
He pulled the drive from his breast pocket. The same access drive he’d given her on the surface. “This key doesn’t just unlock the door. It arms the chamber’s safety measures. If the engine is still active—and I believe it is—opening that door will trigger a dampening field designed to suppress the dimensional breach. But the field only lasts forty minutes. After that, if the engine hasn’t been shut down manually, the tear will expand.”
“Forty minutes to do what?”
“To reach the core.” Girard’s eyes met hers. “To shut it down. Or to see what’s been trying to get through.”
A noise echoed from above—a distant thud, metallic, followed by the groan of shifting steel. Élise glanced at the ceiling. “That wasn’t us.”
Girard’s face went pale. “The extraction team. They’re early.”
Élise’s heart hammered. She looked back at the tubes one last time, at the silent children suspended in their preserved dreams, and felt a cold certainty settle in her chest. This wasn’t archaeology anymore. This was something far worse.
“Girard,” she said, grabbing his arm. “If we can’t stop them, what happens to all of this?”
He stared at the row of specimens. “They’ll destroy it. They’ll flood this lab, collapse the tunnel, and etch the entire site off the map. They’ve done it before. In twenty years, another archaeologist will map this region and find nothing but sediment and rock.”
The metallic thud came again, closer now. Through the stone, Élise felt the faint vibration of a drill engaging.
“Then we don’t wait for dawn,” she said. “We go now. While they’re still breaching the outer temple.”
Girard looked at her, fear warring with something older in his eyes. Something that looked like absolution offered at the last moment. “You understand what it means if we open that door, Élise. If the engine is alive, if it responds—there’s no way to know what comes through. There may be no way to close it again.”
Élise glanced one final time at the tube closest to her. The specimen inside—the most developed of all, its face nearly formed, features peaceful, almost asleep—seemed to float toward the glass. For a heartbeat, she thought she saw its chest rise.
She turned away.
“Then we make sure it doesn’t come through. Whatever it takes.”
She climbed the iron stairs, Girard following, the drive heavy in her pocket—and above them, the sound of drilling grew louder, like the teeth of something waking from a long, patient sleep.
