Synopsis

New York, 1778. Elias Vale owns three warehouses on the East River, a dwindling fleet of merchant sloops, and a family name that has survived pirates, customs men, and kings. He also keeps two sets of secrets. To the British garrison occupying Manhattan, he is a useful loyal merchant who hears rebel rumors in taverns and countinghouses. To the Continental intelligence network beyond the city, he is a frightened patriot willing to mislead redcoats for the sake of independence.
