The winter flood came higher than expected.

Water crossed the lower road, entered two cottages and threatened the workshop stores. Sunward staff formed a chain to move stock upstairs. Parish volunteers checked isolated residents. Daniel coordinated food from the canteen. Callum drove the van through water Martin considered too deep and was shouted at by everyone.

For forty-eight hours the village operated as one organism.

The flood revealed weaknesses no strategy document had captured: elderly residents without transport, medication trapped behind water, poor drainage near new conversions, phone dead zones, inadequate emergency storage.

Afterward Martin did not begin with a press release.

He began with a map.

They marked every failure.

The county council offered resilience funding. An environmental group helped restore drainage channels and wetland buffers rather than simply building higher walls. Adam Reed, now studying sustainable architecture in the Netherlands, sent designs for raised community storage and flood-resilient workspaces.

Martin remembered Harbour Rise, where he had once treated landscape as empty space between sellable buildings.

Willowbrook taught him the opposite.

The land was infrastructure.

The village survived because water had somewhere to go.

People did too.
