Read Chapter 29: — THE INVESTMENT DAY

Willowbrook hosted a regional investment and regeneration day that would once have made Martin unbearably proud.

Developers, councillors, architects, co-operative leaders and university teams crowded into the converted school. Sunward gift baskets sat on every table. Pete demonstrated weaving. Callum led visitors through the logistics area. George and Rebecca presented the mental-health employment programme. Daniel, still limping, refused a chair.

Professor Shaw introduced the village plan.

Martin spoke last.

He did not tell them Willowbrook was a miracle.

"We made mistakes," he said. "Some expensive. Some painful. We nearly turned ourselves into a tourist postcard. We nearly lost control of our company. We argued over food, roads, houses, money and who belonged here. The useful part is not that we avoided conflict. It's that we built structures that could survive it."

Several developers signed agreements for carefully controlled housing and workspace projects.

The local authority committed transport and resilience funding.

A university established a rural design fellowship.

Adam Reed called from Rotterdam after watching the livestream.

"When I finish my master's, I'm coming back."

"To England?"

"To Willowbrook. I want to work on rural architecture."

Martin laughed.

"People spend half their lives escaping villages."

"Maybe your generation did. Mine is trying to find somewhere we can afford to belong."

That sentence stayed with him longer than any applause.
