Where The Ouse Remembers
Read Chapter 17: — NEW FOUNDATIONS
Jamie's accident ended the family argument more effectively than any meeting.
Caroline apologized—not dramatically, and not perfectly. She said fear had made her greedy. Daniel admitted he had let money turn him into a negotiator inside his own family. Jamie refused to let anyone make speeches beside his hospital bed because, he said, morphine had already given him enough nausea.
Arthur's plan stood.
The house was sold.
On the day the papers were signed, Arthur walked from room to room touching doorframes, windowsills, the banister worn smooth by three generations of hands.
Eleanor found him in the archive room.

The sentence stayed with her.
The family moved into two neighbouring flats while the townhouse project began. Arthur's new performance school occupied a former office above a bookshop. Adrian helped with leases, accounts and permits but made certain Arthur signed everything himself.
“I don't want your father thinking I bought his friendship with paperwork,” he told Eleanor.
“You bought it with whisky.”

The school offered free weekly sessions in storytelling, folk performance, York history and scenes inspired by the Mystery Plays. Arthur insisted nobody pay tuition.

“Donations, grants, paid performances, stubbornness.”
“Stubbornness isn't a revenue stream.”
“For your father it is,” Margaret said.
Eleanor helped after work. To her surprise, she loved it.
She loved showing children how rhythm changed a story. She loved hearing teenagers modernize old lines without asking permission. She loved watching Arthur complain about every innovation and then secretly write it down.
One night Adrian found her sweeping the rehearsal room after everybody left.
“You're happy here.”
Eleanor looked around.
“I think I am.”
He smiled. “Dangerous discovery.”
