Daniel's decision came at one in the morning.

He could not sleep, so he walked from campus to St Gabriel's, telling himself he only wanted to clear his head.

The nuclear medicine department was still lit.

Inside, Dr Helen Mercer—no relation, despite the running joke—was supervising two research fellows attempting a late animal imaging study. One of the fellows recognised Daniel from the wards and asked if he could help secure an IV line after repeated failed attempts.

Helen watched him work.

"You're the engineering transfer," she said.

"That description appears to be following me."

"Good hands. Too much confidence."

"I thought I was being careful."

"Careful people can still be confident. The dangerous ones are confident they no longer need to be careful."

Daniel liked her immediately.

She showed him the scanner control room, the detector rings, reconstruction images and research protocols. For Daniel, it felt less like entering a new specialty than discovering a room that had been waiting for him.

Physics. Electronics. physiology. chemistry. software. oncology.

Nothing had been wasted.

"I think I want to do this," he said.

Helen raised an eyebrow.

"At one in the morning?"

"No. For the rest of my career."

She laughed.

"Finish medical school first. Then come back and say it in daylight."

Daniel did.
