Margaret's treatment response was mixed.

More therapy was recommended. Some options were standard. Others meant travel, specialist consultation and expenses the family had not planned for.

In Britain, the National Health Service covered the core treatment, but illness still created costs everywhere else: transport, accommodation, missed work, private second opinions, equipment, months of disruption.

Clara's father, Julian Bennett, reappeared fully in the family during this period.

He was a poet, occasional lyricist and lifelong source of Margaret's irritation. They had divorced years earlier, then drifted back toward each other without announcing whether reconciliation had become permanent.

Julian arrived with two suitcases, unfinished songs and a savings account he had quietly protected for Clara.

"Your mother says I'm unreliable," he told Daniel. "She is correct in most practical categories."

Margaret, from the bed, said, "All categories."

But Julian stayed.

Marcus did something nobody expected.

He had been working weekends for a medical-device distributor. One morning he turned up with an envelope containing nearly everything he had earned that year.

Clara refused it.

Marcus insisted.

Daniel finally said, "If she won't take it, lend it to me. I'll repay you."

Marcus looked at him.

"You mean that?"

"Yes."

"Then don't turn it into charity later."

"I won't."

They shook hands.

The money was not enough to change Margaret's disease.

It changed something between the men.

For a while, gratitude was stronger than rivalry.
