Beyond The Scan
Read Chapter 17: — THE PROJECT
Daniel returned to engineering not by leaving medicine but by pulling it closer.
PET systems were expensive, maintenance-heavy and often concentrated in major centres. Daniel became obsessed with detector efficiency, modular components and software reconstruction that could reduce cost without pretending physics could be cheated.
Dean Hall gave him access to an engineering lab.
Helen found clinical collaborators.
A national innovation grant followed.
The project was called Aurora.
Cross mocked it at first.
"A medical student building a scanner. What next, anaesthetists designing satellites?"
Daniel answered, "If they understand satellites, why not?"
Clara told him later he was developing dangerous levels of confidence.
"Helen warned me about that."
"Good. Listen to women more often."
Aurora did not emerge from a single flash of genius. It came from failed prototypes, noisy detector channels, budget meetings, regulatory questions, software bugs and engineers asking clinicians what they actually needed.
Daniel loved all of it.
For the first time since Marianne Cole's death, his old and new lives felt fully reconciled.
