The Margaret Bennett Access Fund began by paying transport costs.

Then Clara asked a harder question.

"Why are we paying people to travel three hours instead of reducing the reason they travel?"

The answer led them to Greyfell, a rural district where specialist imaging queues were long and public transport poor.

The local NHS trust did not need another charity making promises. It needed staff, training, referral pathways and sustainable equipment.

Daniel and Clara spent weekends there.

They listened before proposing anything.

A community diagnostic centre grew slowly from partnership rather than spectacle.

The fund helped with accommodation and outreach. The trust provided clinical governance. Northbridge supplied training rotations. Aurora's research team studied whether a lower-cost scanner architecture could operate reliably outside a tertiary centre.

Marcus visited once.

He watched Daniel explaining bone imaging to a local GP and Clara arguing with a commissioner about transport funding.

"You two really mean to stay involved," he said.

"Why wouldn't we?" Clara asked.

Marcus shrugged.

"Most people like projects more than maintenance."

It was one of the smartest things he had said in years.

Daniel remembered it.
