Monte Carlo Burn
Read Chapter 31: Ledger's Payoff
The USB drive sat between them on the steel counter like a live grenade. Zoe’s fingers hovered over her laptop, trembling with caffeine and adrenaline. The safehouse’s fluorescent light buzzed overhead, casting everything in a sickly pallor.
“Do it,” Alex said, pressing a rag against his shoulder. The wound had soaked through twice already. The cloth came away black in the dim light.
Zoe plugged the drive in. The laptop whirred, fans spinning up loud enough to fill the silence. A password prompt flashed.
“Luca thought of everything,” she muttered, pulling up her decryption suite. “This is the same skeleton key he used for the casino’s internal network back in ’21. I remember the pattern.”
“How long?” Marco stood by the door, watch ticking against his wrist. “The camera loop breaks in thirty minutes. After that, Viktor knows we’re not dead in that warehouse.”
“Less if you stop asking.” Zoe’s fingers flew. The screen flickered through layers of nested folders, each one requiring its own key. She cracked them like eggs, one after another, until—
“Holy shit.”
Alex pushed off the counter, crossing to her side. The screen displayed a file tree, dozens of documents, timestamps going back six years. One folder labeled OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP. Another called WITNESS HANDLING. A third simply said KESSLER.
Alex’s breath caught. “Open it.”
Zoe clicked. A subfolder unfolded—photographs, surveillance footage stills, medical records. A woman’s face filled the screen. Dark hair. Green eyes. A younger version of the face Alex saw when he looked in the mirror.
“She’s alive,” he whispered. “He’s had her this whole time.”
“That’s not all.” Zoe navigated back, opening OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP. Documents scrolled past—inter-bank transfer records, shell company registrations, payments to harbor masters, casino inspectors, two members of Monaco’s port authority. Then a subfolder labeled ENFORCEMENT, filled with photographs of faceless men, dockyard IDs, routing orders for what could only be disposal operations.
“He’s got kill orders in here,” Jules said from the cot, voice hoarse, propped on one elbow. “Signed. Sealed. Dated.”
“He’s got Luca’s death in here,” Alex said, pointing to a timestamped file matching the night of the accident. “And my mother’s entire captivity.” His hand shook. Not from the wound. “Upload it.”
“Where?” Zoe asked.
Alex nodded toward the laptop’s secondary monitor, which displayed the casino’s internal network architecture. “The casino’s own system. Their security team sees it first. They’re Viktor’s people—if they think he’s compromised, they’ll cover their own asses before alerting him. That gives us a window.”
“A very small window.” Zoe was already working, routing the exfiltration through a chain of proxies, bouncing the data off three different jurisdiction servers. “Once it hits their network, alarm triggers cascade. I’m estimating four minutes before Viktor’s security desk gets wind.”
“Four minutes is plenty.” Alex grabbed a fresh bandage from the medical kit, wrapping it tight around his shoulder. Pain lanced through his arm, but he could still flex his fingers. “Can you cut it so the broadcast goes live on the race channel?”
Zoe paused. “The race broadcast is public. I’d need to piggyback off their satellite uplink—that’s not the casino’s network. It’s a separate system entirely.”
“Then make it two networks.” He dropped a hand on her shoulder. “You’re the best. Figure it out.”
Her jaw tightened, but she nodded. Keys clattered. On-screen, the files began compressing into a single burst package, encrypted one last time before launch.
“The evidence alone doesn’t put him in prison,” Marco said quietly. “It exposes him. The syndicate would have to cut him loose or go down with him. But Viktor protects himself. He has lawyers. Escape routes. Men loyal enough to die for him.”
“He doesn’t have us.” Alex loaded a fresh magazine into his pistol. “And we’re not giving him time to use any of it. The leak goes out, his security team panics, his lies start collapsing. That’s the moment he’s weakest. That’s when we hit the estate.”
“Alex.” Jules struggled to sit up. “Your mother—if she’s in the east wing, he’s got guards. He’ll have planned for someone coming for her.”
“Then we make sure he doesn’t know we’re coming.” Alex holstered the gun. “Zoe, after the upload, put a GPS trace on Viktor’s phone. I want to know exactly where he is the second he sees the leak.”
“Done.” She hit a final key. A progress bar filled. Uploading: 73 percent. “It’s pushing through the casino’s firewall.” Her eyes moved to the second monitor. “There’s more.”
On the primary screen, the folder labeled KESSLER had opened a subfolder she hadn’t noticed. Photographs of a woman—middle-aged now, gray threading her dark hair, but unmistakably the same face. Older. Slimmer. Dressed in plain clothes that looked like house staff uniforms. She was alive, moving through a hallway, and the timestamp in the corner read three weeks ago.
Alex’s heart pounded heavy against his ribs. “Location?”
“Metadata’s stripped.” Zoe scanned the photo’s embedded file structure. “But look at the wallpaper—the floral pattern. And the window behind her—those are the estate gardens.” She zoomed in on the reflection. “That’s the east wing. Second floor. These are Viktor’s surveillance captures.”
“He keeps tabs on her like she’s an asset,” Jules muttered.
Alex pulled the photograph aside, revealing one more file. A video. He hesitated, finger hovering over the play button.
“Later,” Zoe said. “Upload complete.”
The screen flashed green. The burst packet had reached the casino’s internal network, and simultaneously, the satellite uplink established a weak connection to the race broadcast system. The teaser loaded—a one-minute montage of the most damning documents: payment ledgers, kill orders, the KESSLER file’s header with her name and the word CAPTIVE stamped in red.
When the broadcast hit, it would reach every television, every skybox, every betting terminal in Monaco.
Alex picked up the shotgun leaning against the counter.
“Let’s go get our people back.”
