The Distance Between Breaths
Read Chapter 21: — THE PEOPLE WHO STAYED
The first weeks of the shutdown changed how Lakeshore measured time.
People stopped asking what day it was and began asking how many days since fever, how many days since exposure, how many shifts since someone last slept properly.
The city learned the geography of essential work. Pharmacy lights remained on. Bus routes returned in limited form to carry hospital workers. Grocery clerks worked behind plexiglass. At the hospital, Peter received news that Daniel Morris had been extubated.
Olivia cried so hard the ICU nurse laughed with her.
Rachel’s mother remained asymptomatic. Peter’s own mother tested negative twice.
The relief was real but incomplete.
George Nolan was still dead.
A nurse from the emergency department had died two days earlier.
A respiratory therapist was critically ill.
Victories did not cancel losses. Losses did not make victories meaningless.
The team learned to carry both.
