The Distance Between Breaths
Read Chapter 22: — MARTIN AND HELEN
Martin Ward returned to Lakeshore as part of a national clinical advisory group.
Helen found out from television.
She called him for the first time in eleven years.
“You went to Lakeshore and didn’t tell me.”
Martin nearly dropped his phone.
“Helen?”
“Who else would call to tell you you’re an idiot?”

He recognized Helen’s cooking anyway.
He called her.
“This is too much food.”
“You always forget to eat when you work.”
“You remember?”
“I remember everything annoying.”
He smiled.
“So does Lena.”
They did not speak about reconciliation.
They began with dinner.
