Read Chapter 6: THE STRIP CHARTS
Charlie Voss kept his private archive in a metal cabinet beside a lawn mower.
His garage smelled of oil, salt air and old paper. He unlocked the cabinet, pulled out a roll of folded strip charts and spread them across a workbench.
“There,” he said.
The Z-axis run showed the regulated output dropping twice. The first event lasted 3.8 milliseconds. The second, 5.1. Both occurred when vibration crossed a narrow frequency band.
Luc compared the trace to the official report he had brought in his briefcase. The published chart covered the same period but showed a smooth line.
“This is not filtering,” he said.
Voss shook his head. “No filter I know turns a hole into a floor.”
Reed traced the time marks. “Could they have substituted another run?”
“They did.” Voss produced a photocopied test request. “After the failure, Asterion asked for a repeat at reduced input amplitude. Said our fixture was over-driving the unit.”
“Reduced by how much?”
“Eighteen percent.”
Luc looked up sharply. “Below qualification level.”
“Yep.”
“And that became the acceptance run.”
“Yep.”
The evidence was stronger than anything Luc had expected and worse than he had feared. It proved that someone had knowingly replaced a failed qualification result with a less severe test.
“Who authorized it?” he asked.
Voss handed him the request.
The signature was Raymond Pike’s.
Luc did not speak for several seconds.
Reed said, “We need copies.”
Voss hesitated. “You get caught with these, I never gave them to you.”
“You did not,” Luc said.
That evening Luc drove alone along the Gulf highway. The charts sat in his briefcase on the passenger seat. They felt heavier than paper.
He had wanted proof. Now he had it, and proof created obligation.
At home, Élodie was setting the table.
“You found something.”
He placed the copies in front of her.
She could not read the engineering significance, so he explained it simply. “They tested the unit under the required vibration. It failed. They repeated the test at a lower level. That test passed. Then they used the second result as if it were the first.”
“So the machine has not passed the test.”
“No.”
“And they say it has.”
“Yes.”
“What will you do Monday?”
Luc looked at the charts.
“First, I will make more copies.”
He stored one set in a safe-deposit box downtown. Another he mailed to his brother in Lyon without explanation. A third he kept at home.
On Monday morning he confronted Pike privately.
Luc placed the test request on his desk.
Pike’s face did not change.
“Where did you get this?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“Not as much as the signature.”
Pike stood and closed the blinds.
“You have no idea what you are looking at.”
“I am looking at a reduced-level rerun substituted for qualification.”
“You are looking at a judgment call.”
“A judgment call that was hidden.”
“The first run was invalid.”
“The lab disagreed.”
“The lab does not own the vehicle.”
“Neither do you.”
Pike’s voice dropped. “Be careful.”
Luc felt something shift. Until then their conflict had been technical. Now it was not.
“Is that advice?” he asked.
“It is reality. We have a nation watching. Congress watching. Moscow watching. Every month of delay costs millions and gives the Soviets room. You find a problem, you solve it. You do not set fire to the program because a relay twitched under a questionable fixture.”
“It twitched again in thermal vacuum.”
“Once.”
“One time is enough.”
Pike stared at him.
Then, very quietly, he said, “Frank Delaney thought like you.”
Luc’s blood went cold.
“What does that mean?”
Pike blinked, as though realizing what he had said. “It means Frank could not separate anomalies from catastrophe.”
“No. What did it mean?”
Pike opened the door.
“Go back to work, Moreau.”
Luc left without moving the paper from Pike’s desk.
He no longer cared about the copy.
He had memorized the sentence.
The confrontation with Pike left Luc more unsettled than triumphant.
At lunch, he sat alone outside the building despite the heat. The phrase Frank Delaney thought like you repeated in his mind.
If Pike had meant only professional similarity, why had he said it as a warning?
Reed joined him with two bottles of soda.
“You look like someone told you France lost another war.”
Luc told him what Pike had said.
Reed stopped joking.
“Maybe he meant Frank was obsessive.”
“Perhaps.”
“You think Pike knows something about the accident?”
“I think he knows something he does not want to say.”
“That is half of management.”
“Daniel.”
“Fine. The serious half.”
They decided not to confront Pike again until they knew more.
That restraint felt unnatural to Luc. His instinct was to attack uncertainty with questions. Hale had not yet entered his life to teach him that questions could contaminate evidence by revealing what you sought.
Instead, he went back to Delaney’s old test requests.
One request referenced a file number that did not exist in the central index. Reed recognized the prefix as belonging to quality deviations.
They asked Susan Bell.
She stared at the number for a long time.
“I remember this.”
“What was it?” Luc asked.
“A relay lot discrepancy.”
“Where is the file?”
“Closed.”
“That is status, not location.”
“Luc, I signed part of it. I was told the supplier issued corrected data.”
“Did you see the corrected data?”
“I saw a summary.”
“Original?”
She looked away.
That was when Luc first saw the architecture of the deception. Not a room of villains forging charts together. A chain of partial actions. One manager requested a reinterpretation. One quality engineer accepted a summary. One test lead approved a rerun. One clerk archived the final report. Each person could tell themselves their step was reasonable because no single step contained the whole lie.
The lie existed only in assembly.
Like a spacecraft.
Before the Huntsville trip, Luc attended a neighborhood barbecue where nearly every adult worked somewhere in the space program. The gathering reminded him how thoroughly Apollo had entered ordinary life around Clear Lake. Children built cardboard rockets. Wives compared launch schedules the way relatives in Toulouse compared train strikes. Engineers who spent all week on propulsion argued over charcoal grills as if combustion had not already consumed enough of their attention.
A neighbor asked Luc what he did.
“Power conditioning.”
The man nodded politely, disappointed by the absence of engines.
Élodie later teased him. “You build the invisible part of history.”
“All important parts are invisible until they fail.”
Across the yard, a child launched a toy rocket. It rose twenty meters, turned sideways and landed in a hedge. Everyone applauded.
Luc watched the laughter and felt suddenly protective of the collective optimism around him. These people believed the Moon program represented something larger than contracts and politics. That belief was not foolish simply because managers could exploit it.
For the first time, he recognized the emotional reason he had delayed going outside Asterion. He did not want to be the person who damaged the shared story.
The realization embarrassed him.
An engineer's duty, he had always believed, was to resist sentiment.
Yet he was not outside the institution judging it. He belonged to it. Its success had become part of his own identity.
That made evidence harder, not easier, to evaluate.
