The turning point came in early summer. The Conseil des Profondeurs, weakened by the scandal and the public outcry, announced a series of reforms: the creation of an independent energy oversight committee, the expansion of the lower levels' representation in the administrative councils, the release of several high-profile prisoners, including Claire Fontaine.

Léon was in the crowd at Châtelet when Claire walked out of the detention center. She looked thinner, older, but her eyes still burned with determination. She saw him in the crowd and smiled.

"You're still here," she said.

"I told you I'd be," he replied.

They walked together through the streets of the underground, the people parting to let them pass. Claire was a hero now, a symbol of the resistance. Her release was a victory, not just for her, but for the entire movement.

"The Conseil is terrified," she said. "They know they're losing control. The reforms are an attempt to buy time, to placate the masses. But they won't be enough."

"What will be enough?" Léon asked.

"A complete restructuring," Claire said. "Not just reforms, but a new system. A democratic underground. A government that answers to the people, not to the privileged few."

"That's a revolution," Léon said.

Claire nodded. "Yes. That's exactly what it is."

Léon was quiet for a moment, considering. A revolution. The word had always seemed abstract, distant. But now it felt concrete, urgent, inevitable.

"Are you ready?" Claire asked.

Léon thought about the darkness of his cell, the hours of interrogation, the fear and the uncertainty. He thought about the children in the tunnels, the old woman with her shopping bag, the workers lining up for their ration of protein porridge.

He thought about the power flowing through the grid, the light shining in the lower levels, the truth that had been revealed.

"I'm ready," he said.
