Two years after the wedding, Lily still called Adrian by his name.
Nobody minded.
Then Arthur wandered from the school during a crowded open day.
For twenty minutes, panic tore through the family.
They found him on a bench by the Ouse, watching the water.
Lily reached him first.
“Grandad!”
Arthur looked up, uncertain.
She sat beside him and took his hand.
“It's me. Lily.”
His face cleared.
“Of course.”
Adrian arrived behind them, breathless.
Arthur looked at him.
“You're—”
He could not find the name.
Lily said, “That's my dad Adrian.”
Everyone stopped.
Adrian looked at her.
Lily shrugged as if nothing remarkable had happened.
“Come on. Mum's going mad.”
Later Adrian cried in the kitchen where he thought nobody could see him.
Eleanor saw.
She said nothing.
Some names mattered more when they were never demanded.
