Where The Ouse Remembers
Read Chapter 32: — WHERE THE OUSE REMEMBERS
On a bright spring Saturday, the school was full.
Children rehearsed upstairs. Teenagers tuned guitars in the corridor. A group of tourists waited for a walking performance developed with the hotel. Margaret poured tea. Daniel handled accounts badly enough that Eleanor took the calculator away from him. Jamie fixed a broken speaker. Peter arrived with Mia and their baby daughter.
Arthur sat in the front row wearing a wool waistcoat despite the mild weather.
Oliver stepped onto the small stage.
“Grandad, don't shout until the end.”
“That depends entirely on the crime.”
The students began.
An old local refrain emerged over guitar, hand drum and a quiet electronic beat. The words had been adapted to tell the story of the Ouse, the walls, floods, markets, tourists, students, families who left and families who returned.
Arthur's eyebrows rose.
Halfway through, he tapped his fingers on his knee.
By the last chorus, he was singing.
Eleanor stood at the back beside Adrian and Lily.
Outside, the river moved beneath the afternoon light exactly as it had when Eleanor was a child and not at all the same.
After the performance Arthur complained about three altered lines and praised four students by the wrong names.
Nobody corrected him unless it mattered.
At closing time, Adrian came to Eleanor.
“Mrs Cole, can we go home?”
“Five minutes.”
“You said that twenty minutes ago.”
“Hospitality professional. Time is flexible.”
Lily took Adrian's hand.
Eleanor took the other.
Behind them Arthur and Oliver had begun another argument about rhythm.
Ahead, the evening sun turned the Ouse copper.
Eleanor looked back once at the windows of the school glowing above the street.
For years she had thought home was the place you returned to when everything else failed.
Now she knew better.
Home was not a reward for staying.
It was something people rebuilt together, badly and stubbornly, every time life changed the plan.
The river carried the reflected lights downstream.
Nothing stayed.
Nothing disappeared completely.
