Dr Henri Vasseur summoned Camille to his office late that afternoon. He was the chief curator of provenance, a man with silver hair and a soft voice that never rose.

“I understand you’ve been looking into OA 11472,” he said, smiling.

“I’m cataloguing discrepancies,” Camille said.

“There are no discrepancies. The object has been in the museum since 1824. I personally verified the file.”

“The paper is new.”

Vasseur’s smile did not move. “Archives are conserved. Sometimes pages are replaced for preservation.”

“Then where is the original?”

“Lost during the 2016 flood. You know how fragile these things are.” He folded his hands. “Take some time off, Mademoiselle Lefèvre. You’ve been working too hard.”
